Art Therapy
Art Therapy is an effective way to develop a positive self-image and the resilience needed to manage anxiety, overcome trauma related issues or learning difficulties. It can be combined with a particular therapeutic approach such as CBT or Narrative Therapy or used in a client led fashion. Art Therapy is particularly effective for clients suffering from trauma and for those who have experienced painful events or situations. It is also useful for clients who have difficulties articulating their feelings or talking about experiences. It provides a safe space and medium through which to explore inner turmoil in order to gain personal insight and manage feelings. You do not need to have any artistic skills or talent to use art therapy effectively. It can be helpful to think of it as a visual way of expressing feelings and thoughts, rather than art.
Education Psychology Assessments
Please ask for more information regarding assessments for children.
Art Therapy Sessions
Art Therapy sessions last for one hour and are usually weekly. Interventions are usually short-term, with a specific focus. The sessions will sometimes involve directed exercises using a variety of media and, at others, will be client led explorations. Personal insight is gained through the art-making activities and the discussion around what has surfaced. Art therapy can be combined with EMDR to intensify the resolution of traumatic experiences.
ACC funded Art Therapy
ACC fund art therapy for children and adults who have suffered sexual abuse. I am a registered provider for ACC. There are two pathways that clients can take; ACC will fund short-term therapy which includes up to 14 sessions in total. If clients are willing to undertake a supported assessment, in order to determine a mental health injury as a result of the abuse, then ACC will fund long-term therapy.
